Architectural Apprentice

Our exciting and innovative Apprenticeship Programmes are designed to attract and develop a diverse range of talented individuals who will contribute to the continued growth and success of our business.

This role forms part of the Technical team. The technical teams at Bellway are involved before the land is purchased. They create detailed plans to ensure all building materials are bought and in place at the right time. 

A career pathway for this apprenticeship could be roles such as an Architectural Technician, Senior Architectural Technician, Design Manager, Technical Manager or Technical Director. 

What do I achieve?

  • an exciting future built with us starting September 2023
    • a nationally recognised qualification – Level 4 Construction Design and Build Technician
      • We anticipate this qualification to be delivered by learning provider: Leeds College of Building, however this can be reviewed with the successful candidate.
    • Course Duration: up to 36 months, plus end point assessment (EPA)

Tell me all about the role!

  • Assisting with architectural aspects of multiple projects, from planning consent to design, procurement, construction and sales.
  • Assisting with production and/or coordinating of architectural information to support multiple development projects.
  • Involvement across the lifecycle of our housing developments from feasibility, planning, procurement, construction and sales/legal.
  • Working alongside external consultants and suppliers to ensure complete design solution delivered.
  • Working with regulatory bodies such as Planning, Building Control, and the Fire Brigade.
  • Working closely with the commercial department to ensure all relevant orders are in place and then with the site and sales teams to support them through construction and sales.

What can you bring to us?

  • Obtained or expected 5 GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above (including Maths and English)
  • In addition, a BTEC Extended Diploma, Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship or one/two A level (s) in a relevant subject such as maths or science.
  • Motivated and keen to learn new skills
  • Enthusiastic with a genuine interest in your chosen subject
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Proficient IT skills along with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and outlook) and the ability to adapt to new systems.

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a paid job which offers hands-on work experience alongside off-the-job training to anyone over the age of 16. As an apprentice you are an employee with a contract of employment, holiday leave and all the benefits of being a full time member of staff. By the end of an apprenticeship, you'll have the skills and knowledge needed for your chosen career along with practical experience and a nationally recognised qualification.

What does off-the-job training look like at Bellway?

Our apprentice opportunities are registered with a college or training provider to deliver the apprenticeship framework or standard. There is a range of delivery methods such as, attending college one day each week, an assessor delivering sessions in the workplace, or distance learning.

Apprentices will also have the opportunity to attend regular skills workshops to develop transferable skills, business knowledge, and build a network of peer support to share best practices.

What is the application process for Bellway’s Apprenticeship Programme?

All applications will be initially reviewed by dedicated members of our team, taking each of our Key Competency areas into consideration.

Following a successful application, you will be invited to take part in a short Careers Conversation. This conversations helps us to assess your suitability for the role.

Our final stage consists of the following depending on the Level of Apprenticeship:

  • Level 2 – 3 Apprenticeships: A final stage interview held with the local hiring manager, this will be face to face in either the Divisional Office or a Site nearby.
  • Level 4+ Apprenticeships: An online assessment centre consisting of various assessed activities hosted by members of the Bellway HR Team, and various Hiring Managers across the business. Should it be required, you may be invited to an informal face to face meet with the Manager to finalise the outcome of your application.

What is the closing date for applying?

Our application window will be open until 19th March 2023, but we would encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Bellway reserves the right to close vacancies should they receive a large volume of applications before the closing date.

How does Bellway assess their applicants?

We are more interested in your potential and what you could bring to our business that what you have done before. That is why throughout the process, we will assess your suitability for the role you have applied for based on our behavioural ‘competency framework’. How long does an apprenticeship take to complete?

An apprenticeship takes a minimum of 12 months to a maximum of 5 years depending on the level of apprenticeship that you are studying and which industry sector you are training in.

By rule of thumb:

  • Level 2: 12-18 months
  • Level 3: 24 months
  • Degree: up to 5 years
