There is an exciting opportunity to join Bellway, one of the UK’s largest house builders. Our Head Office located in Newcastle upon Tyne is looking to recruit a Group Construction Director to join the Group Production team.

The Role

As the Group Construction Director, you will be responsible for overseeing the construction operations across all divisions and driving the company's commitment to quality and excellence. You will report directly to the Group Production Managing Director and support the group functions to implement the construction strategy to achieve the company's objectives.

As the Group Construction Director you will play a vital role in shaping the construction strategy, driving quality, and supporting the company's objectives. You’ll be part of the group leadership team and steering groups to help deliver our Better with Bellway objectives and KPIs.

Principal accountabilities of the role include:

Construction Strategy

  • Maintain, Develop and implement a comprehensive construction strategy aligned with the company's overall objectives
  • Ensure the strategy supports the main board in achieving the "Better with Bellway" goals and drives continuous improvement in construction processes and practices.

Quality Assurance

  • Set and enforce high-quality achievable construction standards to support the wider divisional delivery
  • Establish robust quality control measures and systems to ensure adherence to specifications, regulations, and customer expectations
  • Implement regular audits and inspections to identify areas for improvement and drive excellence in construction practices

Group Advisory Support

  • Act as a key advisor to various group functions, providing expert guidance on construction matters
  • Collaborate with departments such as land acquisition, commercial, design, planning, Health and Safety, Compliance and customer service to ensure construction considerations are incorporated into decision-making processes

Divisional Support

  • Work closely with divisional teams to provide guidance and support on construction-related issues
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing across divisions to leverage best practices and ensure consistent quality standards.

Talent Development

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the construction teams within each division. Identify training needs, implement development programs, and foster a culture of continuous learning to enhance the skills and capabilities of the construction workforce.

Stakeholder Management

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including manufacturers, trainers and suppliers, to foster strong partnerships and ensure improved product and project execution.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Prepare regular reports and presentations on construction performance, quality assurance, and progress towards strategic goals
  • Analyse data and metrics to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, providing actionable insights to the Group Production MD and the main board

Role Requirements

  • Extensive experience in the construction industry, preferably within the residential sector, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality projects.
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills, with the ability to effectively manage a large and diverse construction team across multiple divisions.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction processes, regulations, and best practices.
  • Strategic mindset, capable of developing and implementing construction strategies aligned with company objectives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to make data-driven decisions.
  • A commitment to quality, innovation, and continuous improvement in construction practices.
  • Relevant qualifications in construction, engineering, or a related field are highly desirable.
  • A leader and team player with a track record of working effectively with colleagues at all levels.

Experience, Qualifications and Skills

Experience

  • Extensive experience working at a senior level within construction (or related) function managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience of the housebuilding or wider construction industry would be a benefit.
  • A good level of knowledge and understanding of existing and emerging legislation across the housebuilding sector.

Qualifications and Training

  • HNC / University degree (or equivalent) preferable, in a relevant field such as construction and the built environment.
  • Current full driving licence.

  • Strong communication, listening and presentation skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Methodical, conscientious, organised and works to deliver high standards.
  • The ability to recognise problems and deal with them in a speedy and effective manner.

The Role and Working Conditions

  • Office based role but with travel to divisions and development sites across the UK.
  • Willing to be flexible in respect to day-to-day duties and hours worked.
